Leah Prestamo
One student of Professor Lin's, Leah Prestamo, received a Fulbright and is teaching English in the People's Republic of China. She writes of her experiences: "I am using my Chinese a LOT more than I had expected—my comprehension is increasing incredibly rapidly. Here I use Chinese every single day, whether it's reading or speaking or just seeing signs and things that are written in Chinese. I'm living up in Tai Po, so people here don't speak as much English as they do in Hong Kong Island. Here there is a much better chance that people will understand Putonghua (everybody says "Putonghua" and not "Hanyu" so I have adapted) than English…I am something of a celebrity because I am the only [foreign teacher] here who has ever studied Chinese. See, all that studying has paid off well."
