Donna Truong
Through the Asian Studies minor, I have taken Modern China and International Politics of East and Southeast Asia in order to better grasp the
historical and political context of China. I have also taken Chinese Mandarin for the past two and a half years and plan on taking the HSK Chinese
Proficiency exam. I am an Interdisciplinary Studies major with Sociology and Political Science and have been a part of the Levermore Global Scholars
Program since my first year at Adelphi University. I would like to study and develop a thesis on the social and political effects of gentrification in
Chinatown, NY because I would like to better understand a community that is often overlooked for its social problems and seen as an exotic place of
cultural curiosity and a "shady" location for fake and knockoff merchandise.
I was one of two student representatives on the Levermore Global Scholars faculty committee (2006-2007). Off campus, I have been working with CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities in Chinatown, NY since July 2008 to organize Chinese residents for social justice and around housing issues and gentrification first as a youth member and volunteer and currently as an intern for Spring 2009. More specifically, I am working with CAAAV's Chinatown Tenants Union (CTU) to organize Chinese tenants for housing justice. |
