Undergraduate and Graduate Degrees in English and Creative Writing
The English department at Adelphi believes in the value of literature, language, and strong, artful writing. Here, students and faculty encounter together the pleasures, frustrations, illuminations, and puzzlements of literary reading and of writing both critically and creatively. And we benefit from literature’s great value as a teacher of history, opening us up to an understanding of the dynamic ways in which works of art are connected to the moments and cultures from which they emerge.
There’s a practical side as well to studying for a degree in English at Adelphi. We’re word people, and the world is a word place, too. Our English degree graduates have gone on to become engineers and doctors as well as lawyers, writers, editors, teachers, marketing and advertising executives, administrators, and every other imaginable kind of professional. With an English degree from Adelphi, you will be ready to enter whatever field you choose, armed with practical skills of unique and enduring value in the world: the ability to think in expansive and analytical ways and to communicate quickly and clearly the essence of your ideas. Few skills are more valuable than these, in work and in life.
Major in English and Choose One of Two Concentrations
Students who major in English choose between two concentrations: the literature track or the creative writing track. Each track for the B.A. in English requires a systematic study of the historical foundations of literature in English, and each emphasizes literature’s diversity across genres, periods, authors, and cultures. Adelphi students can also take a minor in English.
M.F.A. in Creative Writing
Adelphi offers an innovative program leading to the
Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. This cross-genre program allows students to study and produce work in three major genres: fiction, poetry, and dramatic writing. Our students work closely with
faculty members whose fiction, poetry, plays, literary essays, and translations are highly regarded both at home and abroad. Adelphi’s MFA program emphasizes full immersion in New York’s lively literary-arts scene, fosters student relationships with local and national arts organizations, and encourages participation in cutting-edge literary and theatrical experimentations and collaborations.
