Many people have seen the 2001 movie Black Hawk Down starring Josh Hartnett. While the movie is excellent, one can not fully understand the events depicted in the film without knowing the origin of the story. Neil Testa has explored the United States and United Nations intervention in Somalia starting in December, 1992. In this paper originally written for Professor Skinner's sophomore seminar final research project, Neil discusses in detail the policies implemented in "Operation Restore Hope" during the Bush and Clinton Presidency. These policies and the subsequent mistakes made in handling the operation culminated in the disaster that occurred on October 3, 1993, the focus of the movie. The United States and United Nations failed attempt at humanitarianism led to increased involvement in occupation and disarmament, one where a peace-keeping force began to fire their weapons.
