A language is used by people to express themselves—their needs, feelings, and thoughts. Culture is woven into language; thus, when we learn another language, we are better able to understand how and why people of other cultures view the world differently and we also gain insight into their distinctive solutions to universal problems.

The department of Languages and International Studies offers three majors: French, Spanish and International Studies. Languages are a key component of the major in International Studies, a multidisciplinary program that integrates the study of languages with concentrations in Business, Environmental Studies, or Political Science.

Adelphi has been designated as a non-governmental organization of the United Nations (NGO) and is involved in many UN-sponsored activities, which gives our students the opportunity to broaden their exposure to international issues.

Students may also explore coursework in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), German, Italian, Japanese, Modern Hebrew, Portuguese, English as a Second Language, and Linguistics.

Adelphi also offer Minors in French, Italian, and Spanish language studies, as well as Latin American Studies and Asian Studies.
