POL 390:

This course will focus on the conflicts in Africa in the Post Cold War era and on the responses of the International Community in addressing them. It will examine the evolving trends of the security Council and the evolution of Peacekeeping Operations in Africa in the last decade. Through in-depth case studies (Somalia, Rwanda, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Congo DRC and Sudan), it will review some of the major set-backs of the United Nations in responding to these unprecedented humanitarian crises. The course will also review African efforts to address its own problems and the evolving relationships between the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU). The course will conclude with an analysis of the decisions taken by World Leaders at the opening of the 60th UN General Assembly (Sept 14-16, 2005)
