Undergraduate Mathematics Programs

To graduate with a degree in mathematics or computer science, majors must have a grade-point average of at least 2.0 in all mathematics and computer science courses, with at most one grade lower than a C. This applies to those courses that have been taken at Adelphi and are in fulfillment of degree requirements.

The Major in Mathematics

The major in mathematics requires 45 credits of coursework: Students intending to go on to graduate work in mathematics are urged to take MTH 290-295 Mathematics Honors Seminar. This seminar is required of all students who wish to earn honors in mathematics.

Effective Fall 2007, MTH 431 and MTH 457 will be reduced from 4 credits to 3.
Effective Spring 2008, the 3-credit MTH 301 will be added as a requirement for the major. The total number of credits in the major will thus increase from 45 to 46.

The Minor

Students wishing to pursue a minor in mathematics should consult with the appropriate advisor in the department. Minors will be awarded only to students who maintain a grade-point average of 2.0 in all those courses taken at Adelphi fulfilling the requirements.

The mathematics minor requires 22 credits of coursework:

  • MTH 141 Calculus and Analytic Geometry I
  • MTH 142 Calculus and Analytic Geometry II
  • CSC-MTH 156 Discrete Structures
  • MTH 253 Linear Algebra
  • MTH 457 Abstract Algebra
  • One of
    • MTH 244 Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations
    • MTH 361 Introduction to Probability Theory
    • MTH 365 Mathematics Applied to Societal Problems
    • MTH 383 Numerical Calculus

Effective Spring 2008, the three-credit MTH 301 will be added as a requirement for the minor; in exchange, the four-credit MTH 457 will no longer be required, so the total number of credits in the minor decreases from 22 to 21.
