Theatre: Acting Plan of Study

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) with a specialization in acting provides students with the skills and attitudes necessary for a life in the theatre.

Students must meet the University's General Education requirements. The B.F.A. in acting requires an additional 60 credits that include a combination of required courses and electives.

The first, second and third years of the programs carry requirements of crew hours devoted to the practice of backstage and design skills. Acting students often have the opportunity to stage-manage theatre events as part of their training

First year studies include these required courses:
  • Introduction to Stanislavski
  • Introduction to scene-study
  • Voice for the theatre (two semesters)
  • Theatre movement one (two semesters)
  • History and application of theatre technology
  • Introduction to costumes

First-year students are given performance opportunities in special workshop productions in their classes, and in limited numbers of Directing-class scenes. First-year students are NOT allowed to audition generally. Students begin regular auditions in their second or sophomore year.

Second year studies include the following required courses. Note that courses marked with a * are required but may be taken later than this year) and electives marked with ** may be taken during or after sophomore year.

  • Text analysis
  • Intermediate scene-study
  • Diction (two semesters)
  • Theatre movement two (two semesters)
  • Theatre history one and two
  • Theatre make-up*
  • Stage-management **
  • Cabaret theatre **
  • Stand-up comedy **

Third year include these required courses that can be taken in the third or fourth year (*) and elective (**):

  • Acting verse drama
  • Acting Shakespeare
  • Stage accents and dialects
  • Theatre movement three (two semesters)
  • Rudiments of directing
  • The profession and the working actor *
  • Professional internship **
  • Independent study **

Taken for six semesters, Theatre Movement One, Two, and Three may consist of a combination of basic theatre movement; basic theatre dance; stage combat (armed and unarmed); Alexander technique; mime theatre; period dances and movement.

Fourth year studies include these required classes and electives**:

  • Contemporary performance lab
  • Realism one
  • Manhattan production
  • On-camera acting
  • Theatrical outreach **
  • Solo theatre **

Independent Studies
It is often during this fourth year that students will investigate Internships and Independent Studies. Independent Studies may include:

  • Advanced Stage Combat for Certification
  • Stand-Up Comedy in New York City
  • Writing The Ten Minute Play
  • Creating a One-Person Show (Solo)
  • Making Audition Rounds in New York City
  • a range of self-guided subjects created by the student in consultation with faculty.
Professional Internships
Professional internships are encouraged and facilitated by the department, but not offered by the school. Students gain academic credit by arranging for a departmental faculty member to oversee the student's internship, which is professional in nature, and usually located in New York City. Summer internships can also be for credit.
