Undergraduate Degree in Dance
A dance education at Adelphi encourages the student to understand dance as an exploration of movement as well as an expression of culture and self. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in dance is a performance-based dance degree program, with equal time spent in the classical and modern techniques and creative traditions. Workshops, senior projects, and Dance Adelphi offer many opportunities for performance.
As a student majoring in dance, you will perfect your skills in small classes taught by a dedicated faculty with extensive experience as dance professionals and academicians. Workshops, senior projects, and Dance Adelphi offer many performance opportunities.
Given the dance degree program's excellent reputation and Adelphi's proximity to New York City, you will have numerous opportunities to pursue a career in dance. Adelphi graduates have succeeded in many areas of dance, as outstanding performers in ballet and modern dance companies, but also in other disciplines including dance journalism, dance therapy, dance lighting and design, dance on television, and commercial theatre. Other graduates have entered the teaching profession and hold positions in both academic and professional areas.
Graduates have gone on to perform at the:
Paul Taylor Company
Joffrey Ballet
Elliot Feld Ballet Company
Joyce Trisler Dance Company
Merce Cunningham Company
Alvin Nikolais Company
Pilobolus.
Broadway boasts many Adelphi graduates in productions, such as Cats, Dancin', Anything Goes, Annie, The Wiz, My One and Only, Sophisticated Ladies, and Kiss of the Spider Woman.
All prospective dance majors are required to attend mandatory auditions, which are reviewed by faculty. The audition consists of one class in classical ballet and one in contemporary dance.
Auditions are held in the Performing Arts Center dance studios. Auditions are made by appointment and are held on Mondays and Thursdays throughout the school year. Off-campus auditions may also be available.
