Music Admission Requirements

Auditions
The audition enables students to demonstrate that they possess the passion and aptitude for music necessary to succeed in the program. All students who want to become music majors must first successfully pass an on-campus departmental audition. Auditions are usually conducted by the department chair with a faculty member whose expertise most closely corresponds to the student's primary instrument or voice type. If accepted as a music major, a talent scholarship will be offered, at a level determined by the audition.

The on-campus audition consists of three core sections: presentation, music tests, and an interview. The first section "Presentation of Performance or Compositions" is the most important of the three. However, all three tests are used to determine the talent scholarship award.

Auditions are scheduled between November and March of each academic year. Interested students should contact Rosanne Clemen, the departmental secretary, by email (clemen@adelphi.edu) or phone 516.877.4290 to schedule an audition time and date.

Prospective singers and instrumentalists who live further than 250 miles from the campus may initially submit a recorded audition CD or DVD/VHS addressing all the requirements listed in section 1 below. If such distance candidates are provisionally accepted, their final level of talent scholarship and placement in the first year of the course will be determined by a live on-campus audition (scheduled during or following Freshman Orientation) addressing sections 2 and 3 below.

On-Campus Auditions
1. Presentation of Performance or Compositions

Singers and instrumentalists will be asked to present two contrasting prepared works.

  • You must notify IN WRITING (by Fax or Letter) your proposed audition repertoire choices a minimum of TWO WEEKS prior to your scheduled audition date.
  • For singers, one work should be in a language other than English.
  • For instrumentalists, one of the works should be a movement from a concerto or sonata.
  • All singers and instrumentalists (except solo pianists) MUST bring a piano accompaniment part for any accompanied works they perform. (Because of copyright provisions, students should be aware that a photocopy of the original published copy is acceptable only if they also own and show possession of the original.)
  • Candidates auditioning on more than one instrument, or as singer and instrumentalist, should offer one prepared work in each medium

Composerswill be asked to present and discuss a small portfolio of printed or manuscript scores of their works (preferably with recording of at least one of those works). Composers may also offer to perform one of their own works, of which a score must be available.

2. Music Tests

Three brief tests are used to help faculty understand students' skill level in key areas of musicianship and to appropriately place students within the sequence of theory and musicianship courses. The three music tests cover:

  • Sight Reading Test - the ability to read and perform musical notation at sight
  • Pitch and Interval Recognition Test - the ability to discern rhythm, harmony, and melody from a recorded or performed musical excerpt
  • Theory Advisory Test - core knowledge of the basic materials of music, including scales, intervals, and elementary knowledge of harmony. The test result may allow advanced placement in the freshman theory course.
3. Interview

A brief interview gives faculty the chance to learn more about the students' background, current work, and career plans. Students are highly encouraged to bring any supportive material that can help further illuminate their past and recent music experience. Examples of this material are a high school transcript with a record of music classes taken to date, copies of recent concert programs, etc.
