Quantum Measurement |
Many of the most peculiar aspects of quantum mechanics manifest themselves in the process of measurement. What does it mean to "collapse" a quantum wave function? How much information can we extract from a quantum system?
Research in Professor Josh Grossman's quantum measurement programin collaboration with Professor Sean Bentleyfocuses on methods of implementing positive operator-valued quantum measurements (POVMs), also called generalized quantum measurements. These represent an alternative description of quantum measurement as compaorange to the standard von Neumann formulation. What measurements can be performed using what resources? Can these measurements shed light on the nature of quantum entanglement?
Students working in this program participate in research and gain hands-on experience with lasers, optics, electronics, and computer simulation. For more details, see Professor Grossman's research Web page.
