Prehealth Concentration Admissions

There is a trend among health profession school admission committees to look more favorably upon non-science majors, providing that their grades in the required science courses are favorably strong. You should consult an adviser in your major department to work out a schedule that enables you to meet the requirements of your chosen major and the premedical requirements.

Students possessing a bachelor’s degree can prepare for health profession school admission by participating in the post-baccalaureate premedical program. Candidates with degrees in non-science disciplines can take the required premedical courses and appropriate ancillary courses and receive counseling and letters of evaluation in support of their professional school applications. Science graduates interested in becoming health professionals may also participate in this program and may benefit by enrolling in the Master of Science program in biology to improve their premedical credentials.

What do health profession schools look for?
Health profession schools seek well-rounded students with solid preparation in the sciences, a record of high academic achievement, and some basic preliminary experience in medicine (such as volunteering in a clinical setting). Health profession schools also seek applicants who possess maturity, leadership and strong interpersonal skills. Successful applicants to medical schools have a grade point average of 3.5 or better, an MCAT score of 30 and strong letters of evaluation. Adelphi students who achieve these scores and grades (or even scores somewhat lower) have an outstanding rate of success in admissions.

Health profession schools base their admissions on a combination of the following criteria:

  1. overall grades in college
  2. grades in science and math courses
  3. scores on the appropriate admissions test  (MCAT, DAT, GRE, OAT)
  4. letter of evaluation from the Premedical Council
  5. relevant experience
  6. interviews

For more information on admission requirements, application procedures, required tests, and summer programs, premedical students should:

  • visit the Office of Pre-Professional Advising and Fellowships (OPPAF) in Levermore 304 often
  • check the bulletin boards on the third floor of Levermore Hall outside of OPPAF
  • subscribe to the premed email list
  • participate in Alpha Epsilon Delta, (AED), the premedical honor society
  • refer to books on the application process, test preparation, and medical school bulletins in OPPAF

Recent Adelphi graduates have been accepted at many prestigious health profession schools including:

Admissions Tests
Standardized tests are taken at the end of junior year (i.e. MCAT) or at the beginning of senior year (MCAT, DAT, OAT, GRE).  In general, there is a correlation between your SAT scores and MCAT scores. However, there are exceptions and students with modest SAT scores may do extremely well on the MCAT
