Deciding on Medical School
What steps should you take to determine the path that’s right for you?
- Make an appointment with a pre-health profession adviser or with OPPAF to discuss your interests and options.
- Conduct informational interviews with health care professionals and current medical students to learn more about the field or a particular career path.
- Utilize OPPAF to find Adelphi alumni to talk with about your career interests.
- Volunteer or intern in a medical setting to gain hands-on experience and focus your interests. Participate in community service activities or other volunteer opportunities outside of a medical setting.
Career Building Activities
The pre-health professions program provides the opportunity for students to participate in various career-building activities including:
- original scientific research with faculty
- membership in Alpha Epsilon Delta, an honor society for biology and pre-health professions students.
- Pre-med listserv. After you subscribe you can post messages to the pre-med listserv using that email address.

- internship opportunities
- pre-health professions message board on eCampus.
Volunteer or Salaried Experience
Most successful applicants have experience related to working in the health professions in addition to strong academic records. Students planning to apply to health profession schools often use their volunteer experience to validate that this is indeed the right career choice for them. Volunteer work is also indicative of their concern for others and potential leadership skills.
