B.A. in Sociology

Students must successfully complete a total of 38 credits to meet the requirements for the major in sociology. The plan of study includes a combination of required and elective courses.

Requirements
Students must maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA in sociology courses to continue with the major. To graduate with a major in sociology, students must:
  • complete 120 credits
  • meet all Adelphi General Education requirements
  • maintain a minimum 2.0  GPA.
Required Courses (17 credits)
Students must take the following required courses:

SOC 100 Introduction to Sociology
SOC 200 Quantitative Research Methods
SOC 201 Qualitative Research Methods
SOC 202 Development of Social Thought
SOC 203 Contemporary Sociological Theories

Elective Courses (21 credits)
Students must take five courses in sociology and two in anthropology. These should be selected in consultation with an adviser. One non-sociology elective is admissible with the adviser’s approval.

Independent Study
Students may undertake independent study under the close supervision of a faculty adviser.  The topic and type of study will be determined by the student and adviser. Students should make all necessary arrangements by the end of the semester preceding the semester of independent study. Timely arrangements are critical since faculty members are limited in the number of independent study projects they may supervise per semester.
