Start planning for your time abroad at least six months in advance, and apply to one program only.

Obtain a U.S. Passport, if you do not have one already. It may take a long time, and you will save on premium handling fees: http://www.travel.state.gov/.

Visit the Center for International Education (CIE) Levermore Hall, Room 304. Here you can talk to us about your plans to study abroad, and we can tell you about the options and worldwide destinations available and answer your questions. You can also take home some of the brochures that we have in the office.

Attend a Study Abroad Information Session to gather more information and resources about international opportunities available to Adelphi students. 30-minute information sessions are scheduled twice a week on Wednesdays and Thursdays, please check the University Calendar on the Adelphi web site for times and places.

Meet with a Peer Adviser (an Adelphi student who recently returned from studying abroad) to discuss and research international opportunities to study, work, and volunteer available to you.
|

Make an appointment with the CIE Director to begin the individual advising process. In this meeting you can narrow down and choose the best foreign program to suit your academic and career goals.

Download the appropriate Study Abroad application—Faculty-Led Programs (PDF 48KB), Short Programs (PDF 64KB), Semester and Year-long Programs (PDF 76KB)—print it out, and start gathering the appropriate documentation.

Select your foreign courses. Search the foreign university's website for course selection and course descriptions. (Note: In the U.K., courses are named "modules" and in New Zealand "papers.") Print out the course descriptions to show them to your faculty adviser. Choose the foreign courses you wish to take, and enter them in the Course Approval Form found within your corresponding Adelphi Study Abroad Application.

Meet with your faculty adviser to obtain academic approval for your desired courses abroad. Select courses that will count toward satisfying requirements for your major/minor, general education, and free electives.

Submit a complete Adelphi Study Abroad Application to the CIE Office by the posted deadline: End of March for Summer and Fall travel, end of September for Winter intersession, and end of October for Spring travel.

Submit also the application for the exchange host university or program provider (CCCS, CCIS, USAC, SFS, Webster ) at least seven (7) days before their posted deadline. Please do not send any money or forms directly to the foreign institution or program until instructed to do so.

Prepare your Budget Planning Worksheet (found within any of the three study abroad applications) with the assistance of the study abroad advisor, and seek Financial Aid advice to obtain the necessary funds. The CIE will forward the estimated cost of your program to the Office of Student Financial Services. They will send you your Award Letter on the usual schedule. If necessary, you or your parents can seek alternative loans.

Once you get your CIE Acceptance Letter, attend a mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation Session to prepare for your travel. This session will feature expert speakers on safety, health, culture shock, money management, as well as on other essential information for a successful term abroad. Your parents are also invited to attend.

Once accepted by the provider, complete any required additional documents, and communicate directly with your provider for information on housing, visa, travel dates, and overseas contacts. Please submit copies of these documents to the CIE for your files.

Apply for a visa (if required) to the foreign Consulate in the U.S.
Do not make an appointment unless you have all the documentation required, including the provider's Acceptance Letter.

Purchase your Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), Medical and Accident Insurance Card from the CIE Office.

|
Obtain your International Student Identification Card (ISIC).
