Master's Programs| Grading Policies

The grading policies detailed below apply to all students enrolled in the Master of Science degree programs. The grading policies exclude any 500-level course in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and any courses taken in any other department.

---
Academic Courses
Students will be dismissed from the graduate program if they earn:
  • a grade of F in a graduate course
  • two grades of C (C+, C, or C-) in the first 24 credits (SPH courses).
If a student earns a second grade of C (C+, C, or C-) after taking the first 24 credits (SPH courses), the student will be required to retake one of the courses in which a grade of C was earned. The student must earn a grade of B- or better in the repeated course to remain in the program. However, the grade for the repeated course does not replace the original grade on the student's record.

If a student earns any additional grades of C (C+, C, or C-) in any of the academic course work, the student will be required to retake the course and earn a grade of B- or better.

If the student's GPA falls below 3.0, the student will be placed on academic probation and given one semester to attain the required GPA level.

If a student receives a grade of C (C+, C, or C-) or F in any course outside of the department, the student is responsible for notifying his or her academic adviser. The student should meet with his or her adviser to determine if an appeal should be filed.

Clinical Practicum
If a student earns a practicum grade of C (C+, C, or C-), the practicum must be repeated and the student must earn a grade of B- or better. A student may not register for any other course until the practicum course is successfully completed with a B- or better.

Students will be dismissed from the graduate program if they earn:
  • a second grade of C (C+, C, or C-)
  • a grade of F in a practicum course.
Letter grades are assigned for the following clinical practicum courses: SPH 660 and SPH 666.

The following clinical practicum courses are graded on a Pass/Fail basis: SPH 661, SPH 662, SPH 663, SPH 664, SPH 665, SPH 668, SPH 674, SPH 675 and SPH 689.
