Introduction
The Master of Science concentration in speech-language pathology is a 56-credit program that provides the academic and practicum experiences basic to the development of clinical competence in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of speech-language disorders.
The 56-credit program consists of a sequence of required courses. The plan of study ensures that students meet all the academic and practicum requirements for New York State licensure in speech-language pathology and for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
Students in this Master of Science program may also take additional courses leading to New York State Certification as a Teacher of Students with Speech-Language Disabilities (TSSLD) and its bilingual extension. Students pursuing this track must meet with their adviser in their first semester to plan their program and ensure they meet all the requirements.

Location
The master's program is offered in Garden City and at both the Manhattan Center and St. Joseph's College in Patchogue, New York. The curriculum requirements and academic policies for all three locations are the same. However, students must select one location for their classes.
Garden City
The program is based on a 15-week academic semester. Classes meet during the week from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Manhattan Center and St. Joseph's College
The program is based on an 8-week cycle. Academic courses meet on Sundays from 8:30 AM to 12:15 PM and from 1:00 PM to 4:45 PM. In-house practica and clinical seminars will be held at the Hy Weinberg Center for Communication Disorders on the Garden City campus. All clinical practica follow the Garden City campus calendar or those of the externship site.

Admission
All applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Students may be admitted on a provisional basis if they have not received the required undergraduate training in communication disorders. They will be required to complete a minimum of 18 credits and must receive grades of B- or better in these undergraduate prerequisite courses.
Students may take prerequisite courses at other institutions with prior approval from their adviser. Upon completion of these courses, students must complete a form for official matriculation into the master's program.

Degree Requirements
Students are required to pass the Master's Comprehensive Examination in order to earn their degree. The examination is offered twice a year, in the spring and fall, at the Garden City campus. Students must complete all academic course work during the semester in which they take the examination. Students who complete their course work over the summer will be required to take the examination that fall.
Students are also expected to take the Praxis examination which is a test offered nationwide. A passing score (currently 600) is required in order to obtain ASHA certification and New York State licensure.
As mandated by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, students' written and oral communication skills will be assessed upon entry and throughout the program.
