The Department of Curriculum and Instruction prepares students to enter the professional education community with pride. It is committed to enhancing the skills, knowledge and spirit of candidates seeking their first teaching certification.
The department offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs that offer concentrations in many specialized areas of teaching and leadership. Through courses and field work, students learn how to combine educational theories and techniques to improve classroom learning.
The dedicated faculty shares a strong commitment to innovative teaching and an abiding respect for diversity.

Programs

The Scholar Teacher Education Program (STEP) is a unique, five-year combined bachelor's and master's program that integrates field-intensive programs with a strong foundation in the liberal arts and sciences. It prepares candidates to teach at the childhood (grades 1-6) and adolescent (grades 7-12) levels.

This concentration is for those students seeking New York State Certification (K - 12) in art education. Students major in fine arts within the College of Arts and Science and minor in education.

Adelphi offers graduate-level programs for students to earn their teaching credentials or pursue advanced studies in teaching and leadership.

Philosophy
At the core of our philosophy is a dual commitment to the arts and to social justice. This mission is reflected in our curriculum. Most students take course work involving an exploration of the role of arts in education, much of it in summer workshops taught by visual and performing artists.
Social justice as a core value is reflected in the basic social and philosophical courses offered to our students. At a time when many schools of education have eliminated these disciplines, we remain steadfast in engaging students in dialogue about the economic, social, political, gender, and ethnic inequalities that exist in today's society.
We believe that learning is both subjective and shaped by big ideas. Our classes and group activities encourage ongoing discussions and autobiographical inquiry to allow students to make personal connections. We teach students to challenge the conventional ways of thinking about mathematics, science, history, English, and language arts.
We are committed to liberating students from the confined boundaries of traditional education. Students who are imaginative and empowered become teachers keenly aware of the social injustices of our world, willing to explore ways to alleviate those inequalities.

Teaching Certification
The programs in the department of curriculum and instruction are registered with the New York State Department of Education to recommend initial and professional teacher certification in the certificate title for which the degree is offered. All candidates should apply for certification through Adelphi University in the semester during which they plan to complete graduation requirements.

Institutes and Centers
The Literacy Center at Adelphi University provides literacy assessment and instruction for students entering grades one through twelve who are experiencing difficulties in reading and/or writing.
