For well over a century, Adelphi University has had a commitment to the value of a strong liberal arts and sciences education for all students. Given the complexities and challenges of modern life, we believe that all students, whatever their majors or professional aspirations, need an extensive array of academic skills and knowledge to assume a responsible role in society.
In the 19992000 academic year, Adelphi University initiated a new program in General Education to meet these goals. This program is designed to provide students with a series of courses that will introduce them to university life, help them achieve competency in important academic skills, and provide the broad and rich educational experience essential for good citizens and good leaders.
The academic program allows students a wide range of choices in the fulfillment of basic requirements, gives them the opportunity to pursue areas of interest in depth, and allows for the election of second majors or minors. The sequence of courses in the General Education program consists of 34 credits, some of which will also serve to meet students’ requirements in their areas of specialization.
