Issues in the Global Environment
Professor Deborah Swartz, Department of Environmental Studies
MWF – 9:00-9:50 a.m.

This course is designed to provide a foundation in environmental science to new undergraduates and to convey to them as citizens the need to promote a sustainable global environment. It will briefly review human adaptations to earlier environments and will then focus on a series of interrelated global issues: the demographic transition in more and less developed nations; the impact of global climate change, loss of habitat and biodiversity; and ethical resource utilization for the future. It will also include timely topics at the interface of the physical and cultural environments: the devastation in New Orleans, the crisis in Darfur, world health crises, and the rise of China as a new economic giant. Requirements are readings, written assignments, one oral presentation, and active participation in class discussions.
