Topics in Japanese Culture and Arts

By introducing various materials of literature, film, visual and other arts, this course will examine essential topics in Japanese culture, such as religion, historical backgrounds, gender, language and communication styles. We will discuss varied aspects of Japanese arts as cultural embodiments, from Zen-oriented traditional arts ("ways" of writing, tea, flower, incense. etc.) to contemporary comics or "Japanimation."
