Individualized attention through intensive tutoring and counseling are important core elements of the General Studies Program.
Tutoring
All students in the Program are assigned weekly, mandatory tutoring to help them improve their basic academic skills. Attendance is a vital component of the Program. Faculty tutors concentrate on developing writing ability, problem-solving skills, study skills and test-taking strategies.
Tutors in specific subject areas are also available. Students may and often do request additional tutoring assistance throughout the year.
Counseling
Recognizing that psychological and emotional factors play an important role in academic success, the General Studies Program utilizes professional full-time counselors who meet with students regularly. They foster continuous communication between students and faculty.
These specialized counselors provide academic advisement, as well as assistance with non-academic issues. They are sensitive to the specific concerns relating to the transition from high school to college and are readily able to provide support.
