Admission

The Learning Disabilities Program conducts a highly individualized assessment of each candidate’s application and documentation. Criteria for admission include:

  • Primary diagnosis of a specific learning disability or Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder. Other diagnoses will not be considered, as the Learning Disabilities Program is not designed to support students whose primary disability is other than a specific language-based learning disability or AD/HD.
  • A formal, current, and comprehensive psycho-educational evaluation that documents the applicant’s disability as described in the Documentation Guidelines section.
  • Average to superior intelligence as measured by the WAIS-III.
  • Applicants will have an academic background that has prepared them for college-level academics. Students in the Learning Disabilities Program participate in a mainstream curriculum.
  • Applicants must submit a complete explanation from his or her guidance counselor that describes the applicant’s specific special education services.
  • An official record of attendance.
  • The University requires SAT or ACT scores. Some students will not meet the University’s minimum score requirement, but will still have an opportunity for admission through the LD Program.
  • Candidates will be socially mature and have demonstrated motivation to participate in the LD Program and to meet the intellectual challenges and responsibilities of university life. These qualities are assessed in personal interviews with the professional staff, and through letters of recommendation.
  • Self-awareness and an understanding of the applicant’s learning disability are essential.
  • Applications for fall enrollment must be received by March 1. Applications received after March 1 will be reviewed on a space available basis. All spring semester applications are considered on a space available basis.
  • The applicant’s most recent Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
  • Documentation of any reasonable accommodations the candidate has received.
  • Transfer students must submit an official high school transcript.
---
Documentation must be current. Testing must have been administered by a qualified professional and include names and credentials. In the case of AD/HD, documentation must include a written interpretative report based on a comprehensive evaluation, specific differential DSM-IV diagnosis; identification and discussion of the symptoms that meet the criteria for diagnosis; and current treatment. Use of phrases such as "suggests," "is indicative of," or "attention problems" are not acceptable. Candidates requesting academic accommodations must provide documentation that indicates a need for specific accommodations.
