Faculty | Interaction and Class Participation in Online Courses

All faculty teaching in online courses are required to be available online for at least two hours each week to assist students with their studies. The Blackboard course management system includes many communication features in its software, and Adelphi will provide additional opportunities for communication between faculty and students at a distance. These methods include:

  • Virtual office hours
  • Live chat
  • E-mail
  • Instant messaging
  • Discussion boards
  • Instant student surveys

Class participation is included as part of the student’s grade in most courses. As with live instruction courses, it will be up to the individual instructor to determine what constitutes adequate participation in their online class. Faculty will be encouraged to require their students to participate regularly in their online courses in a variety of ways which can include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Posting comments and responses to online discussion threads lead by instructors and to provide links to Web sites and articles that support their comments
  • Posting comments and links to supporting articles of readings assigned by the faculty
  • Participating in a online discussion session
  • Asking students to send each other files or links to Web sites, then write a synopsis of each—faculty then post these in a discussion area
  • Requiring students to respond to class surveys and discussing the results
  • Requiring students to submit short essays on course topics
  • Giving students short online quizzes to assess their understanding of recent course topics
  • Requiring students to post results of their research or assignments and having students comment and/or add additional research links

You will be expected to adhere to "Netiquette" standards of online communication conduct as established by the FCPE.
