Adelphi University is proud to offer a Pre-College program for talented high school art students in the summer of 2009. This exciting program will provide students with the opportunity to be truly immersed in the visual arts and substantially strengthen their artistic skills while being part of a challenging University-based learning community.
All students study in Adelphi’s recently constructed Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts, receive personalized mentoring by leading artist-faculty, and study at Adelphi’s beautiful, safe, and art-filled Garden City campus. Adelphi University is just forty minutes by train from mid-town Manhattan, and the curriculum in the pre-college program includes a full day guided trip to New York City art galleries and museums.
The Department of Art and Art History will be offering this ten-day art workshop for high school seniors. It will consist of two classes: drawing and printmaking. The goal of this workshop is to give students who are considering majoring in art at the college level a taste of a typical college curriculum in the studio arts. It will also provide work for college application portfolios. Program instructors teach in the Department of Art and Art History at Adelphi University. Enrollment in this program is limited to ensure individualized instructions and students must apply to enroll in the program.
Other available Adelphi University campus facilities include: Recreational Fitness Center, Health Services Center, Residence Hall, and Ruth S. Harley University Center that houses an art gallery, cafeteria, Barnes & Noble Bookstore, and the Underground Café serving Starbucks coffee.

Talented high school students who will be entering grades 10, 11, or 12 in the Fall of 2009

Drawing and Printmaking

Drawing Workshop:
Drawing plays a primary role in the development of an artist or designer. This abbreviated version of our freshman drawing class introduces the fundamental principles and techniques of representational drawing. Students develop their powers of observation and expression through a series of drawing projects using a variety of materials.
Printmaking Workshop:
This is an abbreviated version of the Adelphi Printmaking I class. It introduces students to several major printing processes including drypoint, linocut, and etching. In addition, students gain familiarity with the print shop and safe print room practice.
Daily Schedule
Students will study drawing in the mornings and printmaking in the afternoons at Adelphi’s Klapper Center for Fine Arts. Students should expect to study around 7 hours a day. There will be an hour break for lunch that will include discussions on art school admissions, scholarships and financial aid. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the AU campus daily.
Program Cost
Program Fee: $800
The program includes seven hours of art instruction each day in Adelphi’s art classrooms and studios, art supplies, catered lunch each day, and a full-day guided trip into New York City art galleries and museums.
How to Register
Students must register with their parent or legal guardian’s written consent. The consent form and full program payment are due by July 1, 2009. Register online.
