Dance Intensive

The 2009 Adelphi Summer Dance Intensive
July 18, 2009 – July 29, 2009 The 11-day Adelphi University Summer Dance Intensive is a highly competitive program designed to enrich and strengthen the skills and artistry of promising high school aged dancers, and further prepare them for entry into premiere modern dance ensembles and programs at the university level.

Enrolled students will have the opportunity to study with leading dance teachers, and learn and perform repertory from some of today’s exciting modern dance companies in New York City. Students will focus on their modern dance and ballet skills while participating in studio classes, master classes, workshops, and two trips to New York City venues. Classes take place in the beautiful dance studios of Adelphi’s new Performing Arts Center.

Adelphi University is located on an art-filled campus in the elegant neighborhood of Garden City, NY, just forty minutes by train from mid-town Manhattan. The Performing Arts Center is a world class teaching and performance center which houses five state-of-the-art performance venues, multiple rehearsal, practice, and teaching spaces, and three dynamic undergraduate departments (Music, Dance, and Theatre).

Other available Adelphi University campus facilities include: Recreational Fitness Center, Health Services Center, Residence Hall, and Ruth S. Harley University Center that houses an art gallery, cafeteria, Barnes & Noble Bookstore, and the Underground Café serving Starbucks coffee.

Daily Schedule

The Adelphi Summer Dance Intensive is focused heavily on technique and skill development. Daily ballet and modern technique classes are supplemented by improvisation, partnering, composition, Pilates, repertory and seminars that focus on injury prevention, dancing in college, and the life of today’s professional dancer. Daily rehearsals are directed toward a final performance.

When not participating in classes, workshops, and rehearsals, students have the opportunity to enjoy planned activities both on and off campus, including two carefully integrated and closely chaperoned trips to major New York City venues.

Our primary concern at all times is the safety and well being of our students, and students are required to learn about and agree to the Safety Rules of the Pre-College Program prior to program start.
