Jazz Intensive

The 2009 Adelphi Summer Jazz Intensive
July 18, 2009 – July 29, 2009 The 11-day Adelphi Summer Jazz Intensive is a performance-focused program designed to strengthen the jazz skills and artistry of promising student musicians aged 14-18, and further prepare them for entry into premiere jazz ensembles and programs at the university level.

Taking place in a brand new and state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center, this exciting program provides students with the opportunity to learn and play alongside esteemed jazz artist-teachers, and be immersed in jazz performance while participating in small combo rehearsals, master classes, and improvisation workshops.

Adelphi University is located on an art-filled campus in the elegant neighborhood of Garden City, NY, just forty minutes by train from mid-town Manhattan. Its new Performing Arts Center is a world class teaching and performance center housing five performance venues, multiple rehearsal, practice, and teaching spaces, and three dynamic undergraduate departments (Music, Dance, and Theatre).

Other available Adelphi University campus facilities include: Recreational Fitness Center, Health Services Center, Residence Hall, and Ruth S. Harley University Center that houses an art gallery, cafeteria, Barnes & Noble Bookstore, and the Underground Café serving Starbucks coffee.

Eligibility

This dynamic program is open to all Jazz students who will be entering grades 10, 11, or 12 in the Fall of 2009. The number of participants is kept relatively low to ensure that all students receive extensive personalized mentoring, and can be well placed in combos.

Daily Schedule

The Adelphi Summer Jazz Intensive is focused heavily on performance, and students participate daily in instrument specific workshops, jazz combo rehearsals (preparing for a final performance), master classes, and Theory/Improvisation and Jazz Listening/History classes. When not involved in rehearsals and classes, students have the opportunity to enjoy planned activities both on and off campus, including two carefully integrated and closely chaperoned trips to New York City venues (including a trip to a premiere NYC jazz club).

Our primary concern at all times is the safety and well being of our students, and students are required to learn about and agree to the Safety Rules of the Pre-College Program prior to program start.
