The 2009 Adelphi Summer Theatre Intensive
July 18, 2009 July 29, 2009
The 11-day Adelphi Summer Theatre Intensive is an exciting program designed to strengthen the design and technology skills of high school students passionate about the look and feel of theatre, and provide them with an opportunity to be immersed in highly focused creative work.
Enrolled students will have the opportunity to work on scenic and lighting design with professional design faculty, and participate in master classes and workshops on design process, theory and collaboration as led by celebrated regional designers. Hands-on classes will focus around construction, technology, drafting, and painting, with an emphasis given to collaborative creative work.
Students will be learning in Adelphi’s brand new Performing Arts Center which includes state-of-the-art performance venues, spacious wood, metal-working and scenic painting shops, and drafting classrooms and computer labs dedicated to theatrical design. Additionally, students will take two curriculum-integrated trips into New York City to explore some of the world’s great theatre resources, backstage spaces and exciting productions. The Summer Theatre Intensive culminates in a showcase of design and collaborative portfolio work created during the Intensive.
Adelphi University is located on an art-filled campus in the elegant neighborhood of Garden City, NY, just forty minutes by train from mid-town Manhattan. The Performing Arts Center is a world class teaching and performance center which houses five state-of-the-art performance venues, multiple rehearsal, practice, and teaching spaces, and three dynamic undergraduate departments (Music, Dance, and Theatre).
Other available Adelphi University campus facilities include: Recreational Fitness Center, Health Services Center, Residence Hall, and Ruth S. Harley University Center that houses an art gallery, cafeteria, Barnes & Noble Bookstore, and the Underground Café serving Starbucks coffee.

Eligibility
This dynamic program is open to all high school students who will be entering grades 10, 11, or 12 in the Fall of 2009. The number of participants is kept relatively low to ensure that all students receive extensive personalized mentoring and supervision.

Daily Schedule
The Adelphi Summer Theatre Intensive focuses on skills development, creative process, and project execution. Daily skills classes covering Scenic Construction, Mechanical Drafting, Scenic Painting and Lighting Technology are complemented by ongoing project work within Composition, Design, and Collaboration courses. Students will work on four course projects during the program -- a scenic painting project, scenic construction, scenic/properties design, and lighting design and all four projects will be presented at the Final Showcase at the end of the program. Open shop and studio hours will allow student access to necessary shop equipment beyond the confines of the class time. And faculty will be on hand to monitor student work in these shops.
Our primary concern at all times is the safety and well being of our students, and students are required to learn about and agree to the Safety Rules of the Pre-College Program prior to program start.
