Salesperson Certificate Course

New York State requires that all persons operating as a real estate salesperson within the state of New York must be licensed by the New York Department of State.  This 45-hour course is the first step in meeting the state’s licensure requirements.  In this state-approved course, students will learn the fundamental real estate concepts needed to begin their career in real estate and pass the state’s real estate exam. The course is taught by New York State-licensed real estate brokers and instructors who have years of experience on the job and in the classroom.  The course of study includes day, evening and weekend schedules to accommodate your busy lifestyle.

The program fee includes the handouts and other materials needed to understand the material and pass the exam.  The textbook is not included in the course fee (info on the textbook is located at the bottom of this page).  The course is offered at all three Adelphi sites: Garden City, Manhattan and Hauppauge.  Students who attend the required hours and pass the final exam receive a certificate of completion from University College that forms one part of the state application process for real estate salespersons.

Course Overview:

People seeking a career in renting or selling commercial or residential real estate in the state of New York must be licensed through the Department of State. The University College real estate salesperson certificate course has been approved by the New York State Department of State.

To receive a New York state license, students must:

  • pass a state-approved 45-hour real estate salesperson course
  • pass a separate state exam (not included in this course or course fees)
  • have a state-licensed real estate broker sponsor your application

Students must attend at least 41 hours of classroom instruction and pass the final course exam in order to receive the University College certificate of completion necessary for state licensure.  The courses are offered day, evenings and weekends, and in intensive schedules in order to meet the busy demands of students entering the real estate profession.  The course can be completed in as little as a week’s time.  Students can view upcoming course sessions, register and enroll now online.  This course is pre-certified for prior learning credits for students wishing to achieve an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from University College.  The classroom hours spent in this course can also be applied to a degree program at University College.  Speak to a University College academic adviser for more information.


Who Should Apply?

Anyone interested in a career in real estate or those who just want to learn the fundamental concepts in real estate. This course is open to the public. You do not need to apply or be an Adelphi student to enroll in this course.  Students who register should also register for an appointment to take their state exam to coincide with the completion of this course.  For more information on the state exam click here.

Course Details: 

The Real Estate Salesperson Certificate Course is a single, 45-hour, non-credit course.  The course is approved by the New York State Department of State and covers all topics required by the state for licensure.  It also prepares students for the state licensing exam.
