Bachelor of Arts in Literature

A Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Literature provides students with a broad base of knowledge and critical thinking skills valued by employers in virtually every occupational field. The B.A. in Literature helps students develop skills in the key areas of written communication, problem solving, analytical and critical thinking, and interpersonal understanding. In addition, students gain an opportunity to develop and implement ideas, expand literacy, develop research techniques, and fine tune analytical and presentation tools. Focus is put on strengthening the student’s ability to formulate and evaluate their own arguments as well as those of others.

With a B.A. in Literature, students can explore careers in everything from science to business or continue their education to the doctoral level.

Degree Overview

Candidates for this degree must have completed at least 120 credits, 90 of which must be in the liberal arts. The final 30 credits must be taken in graded course work at the University, and no more than 60 of total credits may be awarded from prior learning. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in their area of concentration and a minimum GPA of 2.0 from Adelphi overall

Requirements for the B.A. in Literature or Social Science

The distribution requirement for the Bachelor of Arts will be fulfilled as follows:
  • Three foundation courses in the appropriate area of concentration.
  • A minimum of 16 credits of advanced electives in the appropriate area of concentration or specialization.
  • Capstone I and II
Transfer courses from other universities that have been accepted as the equivalent of Adelphi courses appear on the student’s Adelphi as meeting those requirements.


Who Should Apply?

The B.A. in Literature requires that students demonstrate a high level of analytical skills and the ability to communicate abstract ideas with strong concrete support. These skills are indispensable to students who intend to continue their academic careers in law or in elementary or secondary education or who plan to pursue a Ph.D. which allows them to teach at the undergraduate or graduate levels.
