Bachelor of Arts in Literature: Pre-Law |
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Literature – Pre-Law track prepares students to pursue a career in the legal field. Students who complete this plan of study intend to apply to law school. Adelphi has a unique partnership with the New York Law School to enroll qualified students into a special “3 and 3” undergraduate and graduate degree program that would allow the student to earn a Juris Doctor degree in one less year of college than is normally required.

Degree Overview
The American Bar Association (ABA) does not recommend any specific undergraduate degree in preparing for law school. However, the ABA does recommend selecting courses that address the core skills and values recommended for success in the field of law. Those core skills and values are:
- analytic / problem-solving skills
- critical reading
- writing skills
- oral communication / listening abilities
- general research skills
- task organization / management skills
- public service and promotion of justice
This degree path was designed to help achieve those skills and values goals. Additionally, elective courses are suggested that will introduce the student to important topics in legal studies.

Who Should Apply?
Students who are interested in careers in the legal professions should apply. Students who are interested in pursuing a law degree and would like to prepare themselves in the best possible manner are also encouraged to apply. Students who have excellent analytical, communication and research skills are considered excellent candidates for careers in law.

Careers and Advanced Degrees:
Careers and Jobs
Public interest law, environmental law, intellectual property law, international law, and employment law are just a few of the many legal professional fields students can pursue. Students can aspire to become a prosecutor, government counsel, corporate in-house counsel, administrative law judge, judge, arbitrator, law professor, politician, corporate executive, government administrator, investment banker, entrepreneur, or journalist.
Advanced Degrees
The American Bar Association requires a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited institution for admission to the Bar. Adelphi University and the New York Law School have a unique joint degree program that allows a student to earn their J.D. in one less year of schooling. Contact a University College adviser for more information on this program. Note: Pre-law students must take the LSAT exams prior to acceptance into a graduate law program.
