Graduate Certificate

Adelphi's Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management is an interdisciplinary program developed in consultation with Richard A. Rotanz, former County Commissioner of Emergency Management for Nassau County, who also served as Deputy Commissioner of the New York City Office of Emergency Management under Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

This 18-credit program consists of six courses that maximize the extensive resources of the Schools of Business, Nursing, Social Work, the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, and the College of Arts of Sciences.


Degree Overview

Emergency services organizations are a critical part of our society. Response to, and protection from, fire, hazardous materials, public safety threats, and other emergencies are crucial to the public welfare. The management and leadership of public safety personnel, whether in law enforcement, fire service, emergency medical services, emergency telecommunications, or corrections, are vital to the success of an organization in carrying out its mission of protecting and serving the public. 

This is a six course, 18 credit, Graduate Certificate program that can be completed within one year. The plan of study includes four required core courses, a choice of two other emergency management courses, and finishing with a summary capstone course.

Who Should Apply

Anyone who holds a bachelor's degree and wants to enhance their current career in emergency services administration and/or emergency management should apply to the Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management program. This includes professionals at all levels in corporate business, fire and police departments, hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care-facilities, school districts and universities, transportation infrastructures (such as bridge and tunnel), tourism, and municipalities at the local, state, and federal levels.


Advanced Degrees

Students who complete the Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management may wish to continue their education by pursuing a Master of Science in Emergency Management Studies, which is currently being developed by Adelphi's University College. Please contact the Univeristy College office if you want more information about the upcoming M.S. degree program.
