English/Spanish
Translation Certificate

The demand for competent translators in today’s global society is ever increasing; however, the supply has yet to meet the demand.  Native Spanish speakers represent one of the largest minority groups in the country and demand for material translated into Spanish is growing rapidly.  A high-quality translation requires a person to have rigorous training, a high level of accuracy and an understanding of relevant cultural issues.  The University College non-credit Certificate in Translation Studies teaches students the techniques and procedures needed to produce accurate translations with the focus on medical, legal and commercial translation skills.

This program is taught by experienced translation professionals and is conducted entirely online.  Students can fit their course of study into their busy lifestyles.

Students completing this certificate will be well-prepared to take, if eligible, the American Translators Association (ATA) Certification and be well-prepared for a career providing high quality English/Spanish translations.  Translation can be either a challenging and rewarding full-time career or a flexible, lucrative part-time job and can be done from anywhere there is access to the Internet.

Certificate Overview

Students complete the entire program of study online using the Blackboard course management system that allows students to access their studies 24/7/365.  The course work will consist of readings and research assignments, dictionary work, online discussion, exams, and extensive  practice translations.  Students will be translating a wide variety of material including medical and legal documents, business proposals and reports, academic texts and research and literary works.    The program includes study equating to 120 hours of traditional classroom instruction and includes six separate components.  Each program component takes approximately six weeks to complete and the entire program can be completed in nine months.

This is a non-credit certificate program, but the courses have been approved for University College prior learning credit which can be converted to degree credit in a University College degree program at a later date, should the student choose to pursue a degree.
